First what kind of coverage do you want?
Sheer? This is a light foundation and will just add a hint of colour and make your face appear brighter and even. Remember freckles and spots will show though but with a dab of concealer spots can appear reduced. This is great for everyday and in summer when the strong glare of the sun can make foundation obvious.
Medium? This will cover most imperfections, like broken capillaries, dark circles and spots. Great for in the day and will take you through to the night.
Full? This will cover all imperfections like very dark circles, tattoos and birthmaks.
Secondly what type of finish do you want?
Satin? This makes your skin appear luminous maybe not great for people with oily skin.
Natural? Just like the name it offers a natural, slightly dewy finish.
Matte? Great for people who have oily skin, can be drying so moisturising before is a must.
Shade and undertone?
Select a shade which is right for you, lightest is the lowest number for example NW15, this is the lightest shade MAC do (that's me!) and i think it goes all the way up to NW55 on selected foundations. Remember in the summer you may want to go a shade darker for when you're tanned.
To help you to choose what undertone you are here is an easy guide, if you tan easily you're more of an olive undertone and you should go for a NC foundation and if you burn you have more of a pink undertone so you should go for a NW foundation.
